Modern Middle Manager
Primarily my musings on the practical application of technology and management principles at a financial services company.
Ever Have a Week Like This?

Tuesday, February 18, 2003

In CIO Magazine online, this article describes a week from hell at a major medical center experiencing a network outage. They wound up relying on their (inadequate) Y2K disaster recovery plans to some extent. Lives depended on information getting across the network. While the article does not mention any specific harm to patients, it could have resulted in literally life-threatening consequences.

Risk management is the practice of understanding how types of failure will impact your business and taking steps to mitigate it. If your company does not perform a risk assessment to understand what the consequences of specific types of failures are, it should. Otherwise the cost in lost customers, litigation or worse could threaten the organization's existence.
