Giving it to the Telecoms

Thursday, January 09, 2003

The telecommunications industry is responsible for more of my gastric distress than anyone or anything else, including family. I came across a service described in the blog shirky.com predicting the demise of the telecom industry once 802.11b networks are merged with Voice over IP. It sounds plausible to me. Professionally and personally, I can't wait. Cellphones are OK, not great, because coverage still reeks. Imagine WiFi at work, phones portable anywhere within your building. Now do it for your entire organization on a flat rate plan. How's the cost look? Good? Great? Fantastic? Will it mean the end of those ridiculous telecom contracts that no one can read and that you probably pay someone part-time or full-time to monitor? Monthly bills that required an entire third world country deforested to print? Let's hope so!
