Another Cheer for Open Source
Saturday, January 25, 2003 This post about open source software in the enterprise makes a point that had escaped me but once I read it I realized how self-evident and important it is...open source provides an "auto-escrow" service for source code. Worried about the developers stopping work on a piece of software crucial to your business? You have the source code! And if you don't, SourceForge and Freshmeat probably will. That's a great reason for financial companies looking at commercial of the shelf (COTS) software to consider open source -- the source code is always available in case the vendor goes belly-up, which is a part of any financial company's due diligence in the software selection process. posted by Henry Jenkins | 1/25/2003 12:18:00 PM
